Purpose:  To give individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and provide basic care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in children and infants until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.

 

Learning Objectives:

Ì      Know the importance of breathing barriers and disposable gloves in preventing disease transmission.

Ì      How to recognize and handle an emergency.

Ì      What Good Samaritan Laws are and how they apply to emergency situations.

Ì      What consent means and how to obtain consent in an emergency involving an infant of child with or without the parent or guardian present.

Ì      Why and how to apply basic precautions to reduce the risk of disease transmission during and after providing care.

Ì      Demonstrate how to check the scene for safety and the infant or child for consciousness.

Ì      When to move an infant or child from a dangerous situation.

Ì      When to call and how to interact with the emergency medical services (EMS) system.

Ì      How to prioritize care for life-threatening injuries or sudden illnesses.

Ì      Demonstrate how to check an unconscious infant or child.

Ì      Demonstrate how to clear the airway of a conscious choking infant or child.

Ì      Demonstrate how to give care to an infant or child who has signs of circulation but is not breathing.

Ì      Demonstrate how to recognize the signals of a cardiac emergency.

Ì      Demonstrate how to give CPR to an infant or child.

Ì      Demonstrate how to give care to an unconscious choking infant or child.
