Since 1905 when  the American Red Cross was mandated by a congressional charter to act as a medium of communication between members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families the  Red Cross has been their 24 hour, 7 day a week operation to assist families in notifying service members and their families in case of emergencies.

For family members in time of crisis getting a message to a service member is of the utmost importance. To help expedite the message process it is important to have as much of the following information as possible:

 

1.                 Service members full name

2.                 Social Security Number and or birth date

3.                 Rank / Rate

4.                 Military Unit

5.                 Military Installation

6.                 Current Military and home address

7.                 Service members home and work phone numbers if available

8.                 For an illness the following info is needed:

a)     Complete name of person with illness and relationship to service member

b)    Dr.’s  name and phone number

c)     Hospital name and phone number, along with city and state

                   9.       For a death the following info is needed

a)     Complete name of person who has died and relationship to service member

b)    Name of funeral home or hospital along with phone number, along with city and state

 

Once all the information has been gathered the service member or family member who is in Island County can call the American Red Cross service centers direct at anytime at 1-877-272-7337.

For additional service the service member or family member can all the local chapter office Monday thru Friday 08:00am to 4:00pm in Oak Harbor, WA at 360-257-2096 or 1-888-216-5727 for assistance.

Consultation and Guidance: Confidential help in resolving personal and family problems

Information and Referral:  The Red Cross is familiar with all local base and community resources.  If the Red Cross is unable to provide direct assistance to help you resolve your problem, we can refer you to the appropriate agency, which may be able to help.

Reporting Services: Red Cross can provide reports related to birth, deaths or illness in the immediate family, emergency leave verifications, reports related to family or financial problems,  "Welcome Home" messages when a spouse needs to return to stay with her family, and "Health & Welfare" reports to help reestablish communications when there has been a breakdown in communication between a service member and his/her family

When calling the office if you reach voice mail follow the promotes and push 22 and a staff member will call you back.
